FAVERSHAM HARLEQUINES FC v WILLESBOROUGH ATHLETIC FC
LINDSEY FIELD (LYDD TOWN FC) LYDD
FAVERSHAM HARLEQUINS BRING WILLESBOROUGH VERY IMPRESSIVE SEASON AND UNBEATEN RUN TO AN END
A sparkling warm summer’s morning greeted the four match officials and committee members who arrived early to prepare for the Weald of Kent Charity Cup Junior Final between Faversham Harlequin and Willesborough Athletic ay Lindsey Field, the home of Lydd Town FC. The small café was open so a plentiful supply of tea and coffee started to flow and bacon rolls followed.
The two finalists arrived and were soon into their warm up, once completed it was back to the changing rooms for last minute match instructions. The teams were then lead out by the match officials, Glen Childs, Vince Barnes, Bo Wang and Richard Wincott and with pre-match photos and handshakes complete the match was underway.
From the start the pace was fast and competitive although for the first 30 minutes Willesborough dominated possession.. The Faversham keeper was repeatedly tested and made some impressive saves to keep his team level. The Willesborough keeper’s (some of you may remember Paul Hyde who has previously played for Leicester City F.C and Wycombe Wanderers F.C.) first touch of the ball was not until 20 minutes in. Willesborough’s attacking football was finally rewarded with a goal from Danny Taylor - a low 25 yard free kick through a crowded penalty area and into the far corner of the net. As half time approached Faversham began to threaten more and a dangerous free kick was cleared at the second attempt by the Willesborough keeper. The Ashford Club went into the half time break 1-0.
With the second half under way Faversham clearly saw no reason in defensive play and an attacking formation was evident. Paul Hyde found himself fairly busy with the Faversham forwards breaking down the Willesborough defence on a number of occasions and their intent was clearly signalled after only 10 minutes when a thundering drive from nearly 30 yards hammered the crossbar and went over with the keeper beaten. Their hard work, however, soon paid off after 16 minutes when a flowing move down the right flank led to a low penetrating cross into the penalty area which Paul Baker deftly converted steering the ball past the keepers dive and into the far corner of the net bringing the score level. Just four minutes later Faversham’s captain Kevin Clark was on hand on the edge of the 6 yard box to bundle in a cross from the left ahead of challenges from both a defender and the keeper to take the Faversham side into a 2-1 lead. They came close to increasing their lead with an excellent strike beating the Willesborough keeper and skimming the crossbar. Willesborough, with just a few minutes of the game remaining did create two clear chances to level the game though both shots failing to hit their targets.
Faversham remained composed and held on to their 2-1 lead - the first team to beat Willesborough this season.
Man of the Match (Sponsored by Geoff Stanborough): Jamie Mackrill (Faversham Harlequins goalkeeper) in recognition particularly of his first half performance which kept his team in contention and provided a platform to go on and win the match in the second half,
Our thanks to everyone who volunteered their time including the four match officials and committee members and to Lydd Town FC who again generously provided their ground and facilities for the Final. The day raised nearly £300 for the chosen charities.
