FAVERSHAM UNITED TRUIMPH IN WEALD OF KENT FINAL
Faversham United cast aside their disappointment of being losing finalists in last season’s Cup Final with a narrow victory over New Romney Reserves in this season’s Weald of Kent Charity Cup Junior Final played at Lindsey Field, the home of Lydd Town FC, on Bank Holiday Monday (1st May 2017)
New Romney started brightly but against the run of play Faversham opened the scoring after only 7 minutes when Dave Crittenden latched on to a loose ball in the penalty area and fired the Canterbury League side ahead. New Romney equalised after 25 minutes when Bill Briffitt scored with a low shot past the keeper but Faversham were ahead again only 8 minutes later when Reece Jones netted with a low shot from 15 yards into the corner of the net. Two minutes later New Romney were nearly level again when a shot came back off the Faversham post leaving Faversham with a 2-1 half time lead.
With an increasingly strong wind making ball control difficult for both sets of players defences tended to be on top in the second half presenting few goal scoring chances for either team and Faversham time were able to hold on to their narrow lead to secure a 2-1 victory.
