Hawkinge Town Triumph in Senior Section Final
Hawkinge, last season’s losing finalists, started the stronger in the early skirmishes but with neither team carving out any clear-cut goal scoring opportunities. With a strong breeze at their backs, Hawkinge eventually broke the deadlock in the 30th minute when Niall Jackson netted in a crowded penalty area to take the lead. Hawkinge were close to extending their lead five minutes later when a low shot was cleared off the goal line.
The next goal was always going to be crucial in a closely fought match with few goal scoring opportunities and this came four minutes before half time when a flowing move from Hawkinge ending with a precise in-swinging cross from the right that was accurately headed past the Rolvenden goalkeeper by Hawkinge captain Damian Abel to gain a 2-0 half time lead.
The second half continued to be a close encounter with neither side dominating possession. After 12 minutes Hawkinge’s Kieron Byrnes with no other obvious options decided to let fly from 25 yards from the right and his firm low shot from outside the penalty deceived the Rolvenden goalkeeper with an awkward late bounce and ended in the back of the net.
After 36 minutes a Hawkinge goal was disallowed for offside but 5 minutes later the result was put firmly beyond Rolvenden’s reach when Hawkinge’s Cade Mortimer latched on to a loose ball to the right of the 6 yard box and squeezed a shot just inside the near post.
A final score line of 4-0 to Hawkinge - A deserved victory to compensate for last season’s disappointing Cup Final defeat. A scoreline which perhaps didn’t fairly reflect Rolvenden’s effort and balance of play but rewarded the team who grabbed the few goal scoring opportunities created by both teams to put the ball into the net!
Special thanks to our 4 Referee's, Vince Bottacchi, Dave Olsen, Christie Teehan and Vince Barnes, all of which donated their time.
Note: The management and team of Rolvenden FC kindly donated £100.00 to The Weald of Kent Charity Cup
