LYDD TOWN RESERVES LIFT THE WEALD OF KENT CHARITY CUP IN TEN GOAL THRILLER
Match Report by RC
Lydd Town Reserves lifted the Weald of Kent Charity Cup Junior Trophy in a ten goal thriller against Faversham United at Lindsey Field on Saturday
Faversham started the stronger and could have been ahead early in the match if their finishing in front of goal had been better. After only 7 minutes Faversham’s Billy Croucher went through on goal but shot weakly and the keeper saved comfortably. Only 5 minutes later the same player was gifted another goalscoring opportunity by a wayward defender’s pass in the penalty are but his shot across the keeper went narrowly wide. Faversham were to rue their missed chances on the half hour when a flowing Lydd move led to a dangerous cross from the left across the area which was seized upon by Joey Tibble who shot across the keeper into the far corner of the net.
Faversham continued to spurn further goalscoring opportunities as half time approached. For Lydd Joey Tibble had the ball in the net again 5 minutes from half only to be given offside but was rewarded for his persistence with a second goal just before the break.
Faversham started the second half brightly much as they had the first half and appeared to be on their way to a remarkable comeback with goals from Chris Wicks and Dave Miles in the first 25 minutes to level the scores. Within minutes however Lydd were back in front when Joey Tibble latched on to a loose ball in the area and fired high into the net to complete his hat-trick. The lead however was to last only minutes when Billy Croucher equalised for the Canterbury League team for a second time . Undaunted Lydd pushed forward and restored their lead with undoubtedly the goal of the match when Darren Warne beat the keeper with a fierce shot from 25 yards.
Opportunities were now coming thick and fast and Lydd pressed home their advantage with further goals from Frankie Steer and a fourth from Joey Tibble in the last ten minutes to take the match away from Faversham. There was still time however for Chris Wicks to grab a late consolation goal for Faversham and his second of the match to leave the final score at 6-4 to Lydd.
The Man of the Match award deservedly went to Lydd’s four goal sharpshooter Joey Tibble.
The goalscorers were:
Lydd Town Reserves: Joey Tibble (x4), Frankie Steer and Darren Warne
Faversham United: Chris Wicks (x2) David Miles and Billy Croucher
